Enigma is the annual USENIX conference where the privacy community in tech meets to discuss emerging threats and defenses in the intersection of society and technology.
Inspired and still thinking about these issues that were discussed during the conference:
Usability of privacy applications
Sometimes, people have problems using a product because they have never used a keyboard or mouse before, particularly vulnerable populations. This was an insightful 20-minute keynote by Sarah Auon.
Privacy camps
In the privacy workforce, there are two camps: Those who put the threat model first and those who put compliance first. Both come from another point of view with another set of motivations for their work and outcome. How do companies want to manage the differences and possible tensions between these camps?
Tech overregulation
While some in the US advocate for stronger regulations (for good reasons), the European experience is that regulating tech can be too much - even with the best intentions in mind. It would be great to have this issue of tech overregulation on the agenda for Enigma 2024.
The conference organizers did a great job in holding a diverse conference regarding gender, age, and nationality that is an open, collaborative, safe, and respectful environment for everyone who attended.
